Curved Lines: Tie and Slur

21 Oct

Sometimes it is needed to carry on a Note into next Bar. When this is needed, a curved horizontal line is used, called a Tie. This make the previous note last longer by joining it with the first note on next Bar. Ties connecting the head of Notes, so depending on the stem, Ties can be written above Note-head if the stem point downward, and under Note-head if the stem point upwards. Tie can be seen spanning two or more Bars.

Ties can also join two or more Notes together in the same Bar.

A Tie is used to connect two or more Notes of the same pitch, where there is no different Notes in between. If the curved line connecting Notes with different pitches and different types, a Slur is used. Slur indicates that Notes under it, in music for strings, should be played smoothly (legato) with one bow stroke; and in vocal music should be sung in one breath.

Slur Music Note

A slur can extended over two or several Notes and sometimes spanning several Bars.
