Dotted Notes

19 Oct

A small dot after any Note makes it last one and half times its normal length of Note without dot. If the original Note lasts 2 beats, then the corresponding dotted Note lasts 3 beats.

Here the examples:

A Half Note, which is last two beats, will lasts for three beats with a dot next to it.

Dotted Note

Double Dotted Note

A double-dotted Note is a note with two small dots written after it. Each dot adds half as much again as previous dot. The double-dotted Note is used less frequently than the dotted note.

Double Dotted Note

Triple Dotted Note

A triple-dotted notes are less common, but do occur in Piano and Classical music.

How dots written next to Note?

To avoid the dots unseen on the Stave lines, there is a convention how to write dot next to Note.

If Note to be dotted is on a space, the dot also goes on the space, while if the note is on a line, the dot goes on the space above. However, if a dotted note on a line is part of a chord where a higher note is also on a line, the dot for the lower note is placed in the space below.

Dotted Rest and Double Dotted Rest

A Rest may also have a dot after it, increasing its duration by half in the same manner as a Dotted Note. Putting a dot after a Quarter Rest extends the Rest to 1 and 1/2 beats.

Double Dotted Rests, while theoretically acceptable, is rarely used.

In this lesson you have learned how to extend the value of Notes and Rests by using dots.
